Philanthropy

The Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild includes Donations to Philanthropies in its budget.

A Philanthropic Application Donations Form must be completed in its entirety, and submitted on behalf of nonprofit organizations whose mission is fiber arts-related. The Application Form must be submitted by a THSG member in good standing, and received by the Philanthropy Committee no later than February 1st. Awards are announced at the annual May meeting.

2024 Philanthropic Recipients

THSG donated a total of $1000 to the following Non-Profit Fiber Arts programs.

The Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program supports Elders who live in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Navajo (also called Dine’) people. Most live in remote portions of the Navajo reservation. Many live in traditional hogans, with no running water, and some have no electricity. Some raise sheep as a means of maintaining themselves and to obtain wool for weaving. Each $40 of our donation provides a bundle of wool yarn sufficient to create a small rug. These rugs are auctioned or sold with 100% of the sale going back to the weaver. THSG donated $500. Visit: www.anelder.org for more information.

Artisans Beyond Borders (ABB) is an all-volunteer binational migration initiative of Tucson’s Grace St. Paul’s Church. Since 2019, ABB has brought healing-centered fiber arts to asylum-seekers and their families at the Arizona-Mexico border and beyond. ABB sources teachers, fiber arts supplies, and donations for shelters serving these families on both sides of the border. An Etsy shop that volunteers opened during the pandemic to help sell the artisan’s work (closed in 2023) established the U.S. market for their wares going forward. In 2024, ABB promotes direct-to-artisan sales on their website and travels a national exhibition of the artisans’ cultural embroideries. Visit www.ArtisansBeyondBorders.org
