This workshop will teach you how to work with leftover textile remnants, to create something new, artful, wearable. Bring these to the workshop: your dress form, remnant textiles and trims, pins, scissors, and open mind ready to experiment and explore your inner creativity! The first session will include a tutorial on sustainable wearable art, natural fiber textiles, and basic draping techniques. I will also talk about and demonstrate my techniques for working with remnants, and why I do it. We will examine the remnants we each have brought, with a little discussion about the fibers in our textiles and how they will perform in a draping scenario. Sessions two and three will be hands-on workshops in which I will continue to demonstrate by working on my own project in between working individually with each attendee to assist with their project. As individual questions arise (and they always do), I will take those to the whole workshop, using the attendee project as a basis for calling attention to the particular question/issue and how to address it
About the instructor:
Laura Tanzer honed her fashion illustration skills at Parsons School of Design and technical skills at Fashion Institute of Technology, graduating with honors. She worked on Seventh Avenue in the fashion industry for several years before deciding to attend business school. While at New York University she minored in environmental management. She graduated from NYU’s Stern School of Business with a bachelor’s degree in international marketing and an MBA in international finance. To better understand the fundamentals of sustainable practice, she pursued a PhD focused on sustainable business practice at the University of Arizona’s School of Natural Resources. (Dissertation completed, but not defended.) That knowledge was the final input for creating a sustainable women’s clothing design business.
She says of her career, “It was always my intent to combine my business and fashion skills to create a company that would reflect my love for fashion while also applying the sustainable practice concepts that I continue to teach at the University of Arizona… My work is an ongoing experimentation that begins with sourcing natural fiber, sustainably sourced textiles. Then I create very cool one of a kind & limited-edition clothing – draped, cut & sewn with particular attention to detail.” She digital prints her art photography on the textiles because it is much more sustainable than traditional screen printing: very little water use, very little energy use, & almost no waste.
